Forwarding Email

Forwarding was originally intended as a convenient way to send a business  email to a person who either should have received it in the first place or who would need the information included in it. Correctly used, it is a good tool.

However, forwarding  has become a convenient way to propagate everything from jokes to prayers throughout  the internet world. But there are problems. Some of these messages require the recipient to drill down through many layers of 'forwards' before reaching the original message. Be courteous and forward ONLY the original. Also, forwarding has become a virus creator's best friend. (See Trojan Horse)

If you MUST use forward, courtesy and safety requires a few rules;

  • Only forward TEXT messages.

  • NEVER forward email with attachments. (See Forwarding Attachments)

  • ALWAYS include a subject line.

  • ALWAYS include a message in the body of the message that identifies you and the reason for forwarding.

  • ONLY forward the original.

The BETTER way to pass on text to a friend is to copy and paste. This makes it easier to read, and the recipient knows it is from you.

  • Highlight the text to be passed on.

  • press Ctrl C

  • Open a new email

  • Address it,

  • Type in a subject,

  • Type in a short introductory note,

  • Press Ctrl V

  • As an added courtesy, strip off any symbols (>) at the beginning of the lines. (See Delete the >)

In doing this, you have copied the information to a new email, personalized by you ready to send to a friend. And, the friend knows it is not a Trojan Horse bring a virus to his computer because you cared enough to personalize it.

I have, and sometimes still do violate some of the rules listed here. I promise to try and do better.
