"Hit Counters"

I have just changed my "Hit Counter". A hit counter is interesting because it is supposed to be an indication of the number of people who visit and read. It is an indication of popularity. If there is a lot of visitors, it makes me feel good because it makes me believe that there is something of value here.

But there are hit counters and there are hit counters that mean something. I found that my old one counted each time the "Home" page was accessed, including repeat hits by the same person, and including me! Due to the fact that my home page is also my index to other pages, it very often got multiple "Hits".

My new "Bravenet" counter gives me the ability to configure it so that it does not count repeat hits from the same person within two hours of the first.

To do this it uses the dreaded "cookie", placing one on on your computer so it recognizes you when you return to the page. (Cookies can be very useful)

It also allows me to tell it not to count my own visits. As a result, I will got a better indication of my site popularity. An added feature is that the cumulative number of hits is displayed and it is configured so that my visitors can click on it and see some interesting statistics.

These include information about the source of my visitors (Host name, not personal identity), their operating system, browser and display and color settings. This is useful information for the website design. There is of course historical information as well.

I have placed counters on three pages. That is my limit for FREE service. If I were selling advertising in my site, I would pay for more detailed reporting on all my pages but this will do for me for now.
