Thought  of the Week ...

When we walk simply and resolutely with our God, the path before us is simple, light, and marked by a predominant peace.

The Prayer Corner

Mathew 5:24
Leave your gifts there at the altar, go first to be reconciled to your brother, and then come back and offer your gift.

*********************************

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life

Amen

Happenings and thoughts of the past week
in the World of Grandpa Don ...

This was a post from my grandson Anthony last week:

So last night just after Christmas dinner, the dogs were let out to do their business, one dog didn't come back :/ he was found floating in the pool. After being pulled out and looking 99% dead, Joelle, went into hero mode! She literally blew life back into her brother's dog, Buddy! After about 25min of life saving CPR Buddy was rushed to an emergency vet. I have heard of doggy cpr, but had no idea what it would look like. Seeing my wife first hand breath life back into Buddy was nothing short of a Christmas Miracle! And for those who watch the new show, "This is Us," Joelle said this while performing CPR, "C'mon Buddy, nothing bad happens on Christmas!" #christmasmiracle #doggyCPR #doggykisses

Buddy is seen looking up at Joelle with gratitude after his visit to the vets. He promises to learn how to swim before he goes near the pool again.

Incedently ... my daughter's grandchildren don't have "uncles" even though she has four sons. These kids all have self proclaimed "Funcles" and they live the part.

WORD FOR THE DAY

When the waves close over me,
I dive down to fish for pearls.

Am I obsessed with my Family Tree? You bet I am!

Family Tree

Tom and Liz thought so too and gave me one for Christmas. I believe it is made of copper. Yes, it represents a family tree and as such represents mine. My first thought was to have it engraved with my family names in the branches and leaves and to put my parents and ancestors in the roots. But having it engraved would be impractical for several reasons, the first being that the branches are not arranged properly So, it will be a representation of our family tree and as such it it is perfect. It nicely fills a wall in the family room (How appropriate!) between the TV and the window looking out into the garden. The tree is inscribed in a 38" circle and so is quite obvious in it's location. I hung it on a convenient picture hook but it needs to be centered better on the wall, a task that will require a little help when it becomes available, and it will.

This time of the year always brings thoughts of The Lady of My Life who was born on Dec. 28, 1932. Her influence on my life was awesome in the things I learned from her and from the way she raised our three children. Anne Marie Lawler, was preceded by Anne Marie Montrym (Montrumas) and followed by Anne Marie Plefka. To her immediate family, she was "Cookie", definitely a sweet treat. She was, for me, my one and only "Lady of My Life". She refused to lower herself to equality with any man and indeed it would have been a sin to do so. I have become who I am because of her. Thank You God for my Anne. I will forever look up to Anne on her pedestal. Some would say that I have placed her there but I lack the power to do that, yet she is there. Thank You God. You have been good to us.

This was Christmas at Dan & Karen's neither of whom are in the photo ...

Grandpa Don with some of his grandkids there to support him. Included is a grandspouse and (If Joe plays his cards right) a future grandspouse. A great time was had by all in attendance on Christmas day. All my children and their spouses were there but non of my great grandchildren. It just works out that way sometimes. When the time came, Tom took me home and returned to the festivities.

WORD FOR THE DAY

There is nothing in a caterpillar
that tells you it's going to be a butterfly.

Margaret Fuller

.

Don't judge a person by the obvious because the obvious may be a deception and not any ware near what is to be.

Health

Peace of Mind, Peace of Heart, and Peace of Soul are all good medicines. When supplemented by what the doctor subscribes they keep us in good health. The most powerful of all drugs is the Power of Positive Thinking. I learned this from my (adopted) Dad and it has been reinforced by many others throughout my life.

Kickstarter project

We did it!! The Kickstarter project got funded!!

My grandson's project for Edge Athletic Apparel has been successfully funded through KickStart. They have raised over $20,000 towards getting their fledgling company off the ground. Watch for more news to come. Congratulations Anthony Albano.

WORD FOR THE DAY

Music...gives wings to the mind, a soul to the universe,
flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, a life to everything.

Plato

.

That is why one of the "Favorite" channels on my TV is Music Choice - Easy Listening. I get a dose of this medicine every day because I need it.

I finished the current book in my David Webber series, At the Sign of Triumph (Safehold Series) At last the (evil) Grand Inquisitor, Zhaspahr Clyntahn has been defeated, arrested, tried and executed. This a a major victory for the forces of good on the planet Safehold. But it is not the end of the story by far. The evils of the Church of God Awaiting still need to be ferreted out and a way needs to be discovered to defeat the Gabba which has isolated mankind on this distant and supposedly safe planet as long as they hide in a relatively primitive society. I enjoy the way the author has altered common names such as Jasper Clinton to Xhaspahr Clyntahn adding a degree of interest to the tale. These tales also bring "wings to the mind" and transport us to places that reflect the good and evil of our world to both entertain and elevate us in the realm of good and evil.

The Michigan contingent of the family came to Chicago for a Christmas visit. They made my daughter's house their home base for several days and visited with old friends (Well, "old" for a couple so young).

Funcle Joe

Here is "Funcle" Joe with his niece and nephew. There is a little bear in the background.

Needless to say, there was a lot of fun and great food. It was the first time in weeks that I ventured out with the car and the car survived the adventure. It is a smart car.

WORD FOR THE DAY

 Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence.
Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance.
Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence.
Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.

Yoko Ono

.

All three seasons were remembered at the gathering at my daughter's house as often happens at our family gatherings. But I had a different kind of memory problem (or lack of) this week. My pharmacy has been sending reminders to renew my prescription for glucose test strips and at first, I had plenty. The concept of plenty apparently got stuck in my head and got mixed up with the lancets used to obtain the drop of blood for testing, of which I have an overabundance. (I reuse them too many times). Place all that in the category of stupidity or age related memory loss (or both) I ignored the reminders until I had used my last test strip. At that point I realized that I needed them. My Glucose testing supplies are obtained through my local drug store and I placed an order which (normally) would be filled on the next  day. Not so in this instance. They were out of stock and it was a Friday. I will not get them at least until Monday and maybe Tuesday. That leaves me without several twice a day testing's.  I am sure that I will survive but it begs the question of "Stupidity" or "Senility"? I am not sure which I should prefer.

But ... As I was writing these thoughts ... my brilliant son Dan ... who is neither stupid nor senile, stopped by and suggested that we request that Walgreens contact nearby stores to see if the prescription can be picked up there. We did that. The pharmacy called back and told us when and where the prescription would be ready this afternoon and Dan and I settled  to watch Bulls Basketball. Dan was also involved via cell phone in negating a contract for a construction contract. Yes, he multi-tasks! When the time came, Dan was on his way to get my prescription and I to finish this update. All's well that ends well.

Just thought I would throw this photo in of my grandson Marc and a few friends. He has connections. ... Where does he get his connections?

WORD FOR THE DAY

Holiness comes wrapped in the ordinary.
There are burning bushes all around you.
Every tree is full of angels.
Hidden beauty is waiting in every crumb.

Macrina Wiederkehr, O.S.B

.

Indeed we look for Holiness, when we look for holiness, and it is all around us. The ordinary is derived from holiness and holiness from the ordinary. All we need to do is to be aware of what is happening. It is all one, Thank you god for another week in this life of mine. Yes, there is the quandary ... Stupidity or Senility. But with the help of friends and family I can survive. I do survive. Thank You God.

I wish you all a very happy new year and many more to come. For me, every year is now an accomplishment. May God keep me safely on the right path and guide my every step. (I need all the help I can get even as I pretend to be independent.)

 I emphatically and repeatedly proclaim ...

I Am Blessed
 I Am  Anointed
I Am Overjoyed

Holy God,
help me to conduct myself today so that the world may catch a glimmer of your presence
