When on the Road
The manufacturers of automobiles bombard us with advertising that leads us to believe that if we buy their car it will be the fastest, most safe, and most comfortable one on the road. Driving their car, we will be superior to everyone else on the road. We tend to believe it. The problem is that everyone feels that way.
When behind the wheel of a car, we do random acts of kindness when we know and obey ALL the traffic laws. This is the minimum we can do. To really make driving an act of kindness, we must always try to be aware of how our actions may effect others.
Never assume we have the right of way. That is something (like love) to be given, not taken.
Be aware of how the position of your car may effect the sight lines of other drivers when you stop at an intersection. There is a reason for the white line.
Do not try to be a policeman. Get out of the way of cars that are overtaking you. (Avoid Road Rage).
"Slower traffic keep right". I prefer the old rule, "Keep to the right except when passing".
Plan ahead. Be in the proper lane to avoid late decisions and quick lane changes.
Give them a break! If the driver in the next lane wants to get in front of you, let him/her. There may be a good reason for it or ... not! ... So what!
Start your trip soon enough. My father always left early enough so that if he had a flat tire, he could change it and still be on time.
Some time ago, I arrived at work with chest and arm pain that was so bad, I went to a doctor. I was immediately sent to a hospital where I spent a week trying to find the cause. It was not a heart attack and no cause could be found. On my next trip to the office, the pain started to return. I was in the left lane of a three lane expressway, and upset about the slowness of the driver in front of me. I moved to the right, slowing down as needed, turned on some soothing music and the pain went away. I was not late for work.
Avoid stress ... Be nice!
A single trip in your car can provide for multiple Random Acts of Kindness. If
nothing else, your reward may be your own relief from stress.
Be More Kind than You Need to Be ... You are invited to perform acts of kindness whenever the opportunity presents itself. Help to make this world a better place. Some examples are recorded on this page. I will add to them as they are brought to mind
